High System Pressure Trap

Subject:   High System Alarms on SFI Pump Stations

During a visit to the Washington DC area we witnessed several machines that experience “high system” alarms during normal operation.  We want to list a few of the causes of such alarms and comment about possible resolutions.

1)         High System Pressure Traps – usually caused by fast acting solenoid or flush valves during times of minimal occupancy.

2)         Incorrect Speed Control Settings – these adjustments are critical (although usually not necessary).  The opening speed control must be no less than one full turn from the bottom (closed) position. Small debris can cause problems in the PRV piloting, principally in the speed controls.

3)         Worn PRV’s – the stems may become hung on their guide bushings.  The only solution is to replace the stem and bushings.

The simplest solution at present is to install a small relief valve on the discharge header that discharge to drain.
